If the Crawfordsville District Public Library does not own the book or have the article that you need, we can attempt to borrow it from another library through our Interlibrary Loan service.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service whereby a user of one library can borrow or receive materials that are owned by another library.
CDPL uses the ILL service to borrow materials from Indiana libraries as well as many out of state libraries. CDPL patrons may request ILLs for books, movies, music, audio-books, and magazines.
Patrons may also request photocopies of archival or research information. The patron may be asked to pay the fee for photocopies before a request is made.
The library endorses the principles relating to interlibrary loan included in the Indiana Library Resource Sharing Policy, the ALA Interlibrary Loan Code, the U.S. Copyright Law and U.S. Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works Guidelines, and federal and state laws governing confidentiality of records.
Who can use the ILL service?
This service is offered to all patrons holding a valid Residential (Union Township), Fee, or Courtesy library card from the Crawfordsville District Public Library. You must have no outstanding fees or overdue items. Patrons must be 18 or older to request and receive an interlibrary loan.
Reciprocal Borrowers (RB), Public Library Access Card (PLAC), and Visitor Card holders must make ILL requests through their home libraries.
How do I make an ILL request?
- You can make a request at the Reference Desk in person or by phone (362-2242 ext. 117).
- Search for and select your title in WorldCat Discovery. If you are in the library, submit your interlibrary loan request by clicking on the Request Item tab. If you are not in the library, click on the Library Links tab and select ILL Request Form from the drop-down menu.
What can I borrow?
You may request items not owned by the Crawfordsville District Public Library or items missing from the library’s collection. You may not request items owned by the library.
What is my ILL limit?
You are limited to 10 requests per card at one time.
Note: Reading groups that wish to borrow multiple copies of books may place a special order by contacting the Technical Services staff.
What is the cost?
The service is free; this cost is underwritten by the Friends of the Library.
While it is not typical, some materials, such as photocopies, may have a cost. CDPL will never request materials that require a fee.
How long does it take to get an ILL?
Requests usually take 10 days to 2 weeks to arrive. Some items may take longer.
How long can I keep ILL materials?
The length of time patrons may keep ILLs is up to the lending library and may vary. The item due date can be found on the check-out receipt.
Can I renew ILL materials?
ILL renewals are determined by the lending libraries. Renewal requests must be made at least two business days before due date. This allows adequate time for renewal correspondence with the lending libraries. Patron will be notified of renewal due date or denial.
What if I lose or damage my ILL items?
Our library is responsible for the safety of materials borrowed through ILL. Our borrowing privileges are jeopardized if anything is lost or damaged. Because of this, the library may suspend the ILL privileges for patrons who fail to return their materials in a timely manner, or in the same condition it was received.
The fines for lost or damaged ILLs are set by the lending libraries and CDPL will add a processing fee.
What if my ILL request is canceled?
ILL requests are sometimes canceled for reasons included but not limited to, lender’s ILL policies; limited availability or lack of availability in U.S.; item requested is too new or too popular.
Canceled ILL requests will be available as a message in patrons’ accounts for 60 days. To access messages, log in to your account with your library card barcode and PIN. Once logged in, click on your name. Or call the Circulation Department at 362-2242 ext. 109
